Thai Yoga Massage
What is Thai Yoga Massage? Thai Yoga Massage is a body and energy work practice with deep spiritual roots. Created by native Thai medicine people and passed down through many generations into modernity, it is a modality unique in its blending of spiritual and physical wisdom. With deep ties to Buddhism, as it is said to have been perfected by The Father Doctor, personal physician to the Buddha, Thai yoga massage is now practiced all around the world and the relaxing and healing effects are enjoyed by people of any and all spiritual practices. Some have described it as “lazy person’s yoga”, as the practitioner will assist in placing the receiver in positions similar to yoga asanas while applying relaxing acupressure to muscles and different parts of the body. This modality is done with the receiver lying on a Thai mat on the floor fully clothed.
How does it work? Thai yoga massage works to promote relaxation in the entire body and nervous system. Practitioners will work to stimulate and clear energy lines in the body, called sen lines, similar to meridians in acupuncture and chakras in yogic medicine. Moving energy from the bottom-up and out-in to be digested and used more efficiently by the receiver’s system. Incorporating assisted stretching, acupressure, relaxing touch, rocking, pulling of limbs, and energy line work.
How Can It Help? Receiving Thai yoga massage can promote deep relaxation and nervous system healing through a feeling of being able to completely let go and receive. A feeling of surrender and release can accompany the energy work and body work of Thai yoga massage, as you lie back and allow the practitioner to move your body into gentle stretches. Lying flat on the floor is beneficial to the physical body in ways our Western culture does not provide enough opportunity for, and allowing yourself to be held in this way is incredible for co-regulating the nervous system.
What is a Session Like? You will be lying on the floor on a Thai mat, fully clothed, and the practitioner will begin at the feet. A session usually incorporates gentle assisted stretching of limbs, spinal twists, assists up to a seated position and back down to lying supine, gentle acupressure from the hands of the practitioner, sometimes the practitioner will use their feet on different parts of the body to stimulate energy lines, some gentle shaking or rocking of the body, relaxing stimulation of the head and feet. This is a very hands-on modality. Lots of communication with the practitioner before, during, and after to ensure consent is always present with touch. 60 or 90 minute sessions.
Andi Wesley, Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner
Andi started learning about energy work in 2020, literally right before the world shutdown. During that time, her yoga and spiritual practice deepened into an “awakening” and something of a calling. After learning Reiki, she has since become a dedicated yoga teacher, creating her own yoga community classes out of a local art gallery and park space, and now joining the kula at Balancing Owl. Passionate about the healing powers of meditation, movement, touch, and connection to Oneself, she dove into studies of reflexology and Thai yoga massage. Certified in each of these studies, she finds they all work to inform and enrich one another to create a unique healing experience for her clients.
